Miami in December: Weather, Events, Crowds & What to Pack
Jan 20, 20268 min read
December is the start of Miami's peak tourist season β 75β80Β°F during the day, 60s at night, almost no rain, and the rest of the country is freezing. It's also the month with the biggest single price swing of the year, thanks to Art Basel in the first week and the holidays in the last two. Here's the honest guide to visiting Miami in December: the weather, the events, the costs, and what to pack.
βοΈ Miami Weather in December
Average high: 77Β°F (25Β°C)
Average low: 65Β°F (18Β°C)
Rainfall: ~2 inches total (one of the driest months)
Humidity: 70% β the most comfortable humidity level of the year
Water temp: 74Β°F β swimmable but no longer "warm Caribbean." Most people still go in.
Daylight: Sunrise ~7:00 AM, sunset ~5:30 PM. Early sunsets, but great golden hour.
December is objectively the most pleasant weather month in Miami. You can walk around in shorts at noon and need a light sweater by 8 PM. It's why New Yorkers and Canadians book the entire second half of December years in advance.
The catch: occasional cold fronts drop the overnight lows to the mid-50s for 2β3 days at a time, and the water temp can drop briefly to 68Β°F. Bring one warm layer.
The largest contemporary art fair in the Americas takes over Miami Beach Convention Center plus ~20 satellite fairs. The whole city is busy.
Main fair tickets: ~$85/day general, $150+ VIP. Sells out.
Satellite fairs (Design Miami, Untitled, NADA, Pulse) β all have their own tickets. Most are $30β$50.
Free with the Basel vibe: Wynwood Walls gets new murals commissioned, outdoor installations pop up across Miami Beach, Faena Forum hosts a packed week of events.
Parties: Invite-only if you're not connected; look for rotating pop-ups in South Beach hotels.
Hotel prices during Basel week run 2β4x normal. If you're not attending the fair, avoid this week entirely or stay in Brickell / Coral Gables instead of Miami Beach.
The 10 days between Art Basel and Christmas are the sweet spot of the month: great weather, lower prices, no mega-events. If you have flexibility, book for December 10β18.
Week 4 β Christmas to New Year's
Peak season kicks in. Prices climb, flights sell out, restaurants need reservations 2 weeks ahead.
Christmas Day β Most hotels do a brunch; many restaurants are closed or do a set menu. Beach is open and gorgeous.
NYE week (Dec 28β31) β Hotel rates triple. Clubs do $200β$500 cover for NYE proper.
December 31 β Miami does NYE big. See "NYE in Miami" below.
π New Year's Eve in Miami
Miami NYE is one of the biggest party nights in the US. Options:
The Big Orange Drop at Bayfront Park β Miami's version of Times Square. A giant illuminated orange descends from the InterContinental at midnight, fireworks over Biscayne Bay. Free to watch from the park or seawall. Crowded but family-friendly.
Club tables β LIV, E11EVEN, Story, Space all sell out 4+ weeks ahead. Expect $3,000β$10,000 bottle minimums for tables; $150β$300 for general admission.
Rooftop bars β Sugar at EAST, Juvia, Sparrow all run NYE packages (~$200β$400 with open bar and champagne toast).
Beach clubs β Nikki Beach, SLS Hyde do NYE events. Early sell-out.
Hotel gala dinners β Fontainebleau, Faena, 1 Hotel run $500+ per person seated dinners with live bands.
Watch the fireworks: Best views from South Pointe Park, Bayside, the Venetian Causeway, or any Miami Beach rooftop facing west.
Walking Wynwood / Little Havana β Cool enough to wander for 3 hours without melting. See Wynwood guide and Little Havana guide.
Bay sunset sails β Sunset is at 5:30 so you can sail, eat, and still be home by 9.
Coconut Grove boat shows β Miami International Boat Show is actually in February, but December has Coconut Grove's Saturday farmer's market and winter sailing.
Miami Christmas is palm-trees-with-lights rather than snow-and-sweaters, but the city leans into the contrast hard:
Wynwood Holiday Market β Pop-up market in Wynwood with local vendors, food trucks, and holiday art.
Santa's Enchanted Forest β 100+ rides and 3 million lights at Tropical Park. Runs late October through early January.
Downtown holiday lights β Bayfront Park tree lighting, ice skating rink at Brickell City Centre (yes, actual ice in 75Β°F).
Cuban Nochebuena on December 24 β the real Miami Christmas celebration. Many Little Havana restaurants do a full roasted pork feast β Versailles, La Carreta, Havana 1957. Reserve ahead.
πΎ What to Pack for Miami in December
Swimsuit + beach coverup β the ocean's still swimmable.
Shorts and tees for daytime β most days 75β80Β°F.
Light sweater or hoodie β for evenings, particularly if a cold front rolls through.
One pair of real pants or a nicer outfit β evenings are cooler + clubs and upscale restaurants enforce dress codes.
Sunscreen β winter sun in Miami still burns.
Sunglasses β non-negotiable.
Light rain jacket β occasional fronts.
Closed-toe shoes β for clubs, and just generally for walking more than 10 blocks.
Skip: heavy coat, winter boots, umbrella (it rarely rains; when it does, it's brief).
December is the single best weather month in Miami β but the price spike during Basel and NYE is real. Book the middle two weeks if you can, pack one sweater, and make a reservation at Versailles for December 24 if you want the Cuban Christmas experience.
