Miami Weather & What to Pack: A Season-by-Season Guide

Sep 20, 20253 min read

Miami's weather is tropical, which means hot and humid for most of the year with a distinct wet season and dry season. Here's what to actually expect — and what to throw in your suitcase.

☀️ Dry Season (December–April) — Peak Tourist Season

This is the best weather Miami gets. Temperatures range from 65-80°F with low humidity, blue skies, and almost no rain. Evenings can be surprisingly cool (low 60s in January), so bring a light jacket. This is when hotel prices peak and beaches are busiest, but the weather is genuinely perfect.

What to pack: Light layers, a hoodie or light jacket for evenings, sunscreen (the sun is strong even in winter), sunglasses, and comfortable walking shoes.

🌧️ Wet Season (May–October) — Locals' Secret

Temperatures climb to 85-95°F with high humidity and daily afternoon thunderstorms, usually lasting 30-60 minutes before clearing. Mornings are typically sunny and gorgeous. Hurricane season runs June through November, with September and October being the highest risk months. Hotel prices drop 30-50%, making this the best time for budget travelers.

What to pack: Light, breathable clothing (cotton and linen are your friends), a compact rain jacket or travel umbrella, waterproof sandals, and extra sunscreen. You'll sweat through anything heavy.

🌤️ Shoulder Months (April–May, November)

April and May bring warming temperatures but haven't hit full humidity yet. November is lovely — hurricane season is winding down and the winter crowds haven't arrived. These months often offer the best combination of good weather and reasonable prices.

👗 What to Wear in Miami

Miami is casual but stylish. Think elevated beachwear:

  • Daytime: Shorts, sundresses, linen shirts, sandals, swimwear with a cover-up
  • Nightlife: Miami clubs have dress codes — no flip-flops, no tank tops for men. Collared shirts or stylish t-shirts with pants and clean shoes for guys. Dresses or fashionable going-out clothes for women
  • Restaurants: Most are casual, but upscale spots like Nobu, Komodo, and Zuma expect smart casual at minimum. Check our Miami food guide for restaurant recommendations
  • Beach: Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and water shoes for rocky areas like Virginia Key
  • 🧳 Packing Essentials

  • SPF 50+ sunscreen (reapply every 2 hours)
  • Reusable water bottle (Miami heat dehydrates you fast)
  • Aloe vera gel (just in case)
  • Portable phone charger (beach days drain batteries)
  • Waterproof phone case
  • Bug spray (mosquitoes are real, especially near the Everglades)
  • A dressy outfit for nightlife

  • The biggest mistake visitors make is underestimating the sun. Even on cloudy days, Miami's UV index is among the highest in the continental U.S. Wear sunscreen, drink water, and save your energy for the nightlife.
