Family-Friendly Miami: The Best Things to Do with Kids

Jan 10, 20262 min read

Miami is an incredible family destination — world-class beaches, wildlife encounters, interactive museums, and outdoor adventures. Here's the parent-tested guide.

🏖️ Best Beaches for Families

Crandon Park Beach on Key Biscayne is the #1 family beach. Calm shallow waters, a sandbar that creates a natural wading pool, coconut palm shade, and clean restrooms. Matheson Hammock Park in Coral Gables has a man-made atoll pool — saltwater fills it at high tide, then the water stays calm and warm. Perfect for toddlers.

🎡 Museums & Attractions

Frost Museum of Science in downtown is the top family attraction. The three-level aquarium with a 500,000-gallon Gulf Stream tank is mesmerizing. The planetarium shows are excellent for all ages. Budget 3-4 hours.

Zoo Miami is the only tropical zoo in the continental US. Animals from Asia, Africa, and Australia roam in open-air exhibits (no cages). The splash pad and playground give kids a break from animal viewing. Go early — it's hot by midday.

Miami Children's Museum on Watson Island is designed for ages 1-10 with interactive exhibits including a mini supermarket, music studio, and bank. Allow 2-3 hours.

🐊 Outdoor Adventures

Everglades Airboat Tour — kids love the speed and the alligators. Most tour operators welcome children 3+. Shark Valley's tram tour is a calmer option with guaranteed gator sightings.

Oleta River State Park — rent kayaks or paddleboards and explore mangrove-lined waterways. The park also has a sandy beach, playground, and mountain bike trails.

Jungle Island — a zoological park on Watson Island with lemurs, sloths, kangaroos, and a Super Flight zipline experience for older kids.

🍕 Family Dining Tips

  • Cuban restaurants are family-friendly and portions are huge — great value
  • Flanigan's is a local chain with big portions, seafood, and ribs kids love
  • Most beach restaurants have outdoor seating where sandy, wet kids won't be an issue
  • Avoid the super-trendy restaurants in South Beach and Brickell — they're not kid-friendly

  • ☀️ Tip: Sunscreen, hats, and water bottles are non-negotiable. The Miami sun is stronger than you think, even on cloudy days. Reapply sunscreen every 90 minutes.
