Best Day Trips from Miami: Keys, Everglades & More

Dec 10, 20252 min read

Miami is a perfect base for exploring South Florida. These day trips range from 30 minutes to 3 hours and each one is worth the drive.

🏝️ The Florida Keys & Key West

The Overseas Highway (US-1) from Miami to Key West is one of America's most scenic drives. Key Largo (1 hour) has John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park for snorkeling. Islamorada (1.5 hours) is the sportfishing capital. Marathon (2 hours) has the Turtle Hospital. Key West (3.5 hours) is the crown jewel — Duval Street, Hemingway's house, and the southernmost point in the continental US. Start early to make it a full day.

🐊 Everglades National Park

Just 45 minutes from downtown Miami. The best access points are Shark Valley (tram tours and a 65-foot observation tower) and Anhinga Trail (short boardwalk where you're guaranteed to see alligators). Airboat tours from private operators along Tamiami Trail are thrilling but not inside the national park itself. Go during dry season (Dec-April) for the best wildlife spotting.

🏙️ Fort Lauderdale

30 minutes north on I-95. Walk Las Olas Boulevard for boutique shopping and dining. Take the cheap water taxi along the Intracoastal Waterway past mega-yachts and mansions. The beach is wide, clean, and less crowded than South Beach. NSU Art Museum is excellent.

🤿 Biscayne National Park

30 minutes south of Miami. 95% of this national park is underwater — perfect for snorkeling and diving. Glass-bottom boat tours depart from Convoy Point. The coral reefs here are stunning and far less crowded than Key Largo.

💎 Palm Beach & Worth Avenue

1.5 hours north. Old-money Florida at its finest. Walk Worth Avenue for luxury shopping, tour the Flagler Museum (a Gilded Age mansion), and drive along Ocean Boulevard to see the estates. Grab lunch at Buccan for upscale small plates.

🌿 Big Cypress National Preserve

Adjacent to the Everglades, about 1 hour west. The Loop Road scenic drive is a free, unpaved road through cypress swamp where you'll see alligators sunning on the road. Less crowded than Everglades and equally beautiful.

🚗 Tip: Rent a car for day trips. Most of these destinations aren't reachable by public transit.
