About Zoo Miami
Zoo Miami (officially Miami-Dade Zoological Park and Gardens) is the largest and oldest zoological garden in Florida, and the only tropical zoo in the continental United States. Spread across 750 acres with over 100 exhibits, the zoo is home to more than 3,000 animals representing over 500 species from Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas. Unlike many zoos, Zoo Miami uses natural barriers like moats and vegetation instead of cages, giving animals more space and visitors a more immersive experience. Highlights include the Florida: Mission Everglades exhibit showcasing native wildlife, the Amazon & Beyond exhibit, and the African Plains where giraffes, elephants, and zebras roam. The zoo offers camel rides, giraffe feedings, splash pads for kids, and a monorail tour of the grounds. The Dr. Wilde's World playground and water play area make it an excellent family destination. Located in south Miami-Dade, Zoo Miami is about 30 minutes from downtown and should be planned as a half-day or full-day trip. Arrive early to beat the heat and see the animals at their most active.
The Miami-Dade Zoological Park and Gardens, also known as Zoo Miami, is a zoological park and garden in Miami and is the largest zoo in Florida. Originally established in 1948 at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne, Zoo Miami relocated in 1980 as Miami MetroZoo to the former location of the Naval Air Station Richmond, southwest of Miami in southern unincorporated Miami-Dade County, surrounded by the census-designated places of Three Lakes (north), South Miami Heights (south), Palmetto Estates (east) and Richmond West (west).
