About Vizcaya Museum and Gardens
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a National Historic Landmark situated on the shores of Biscayne Bay in the Coconut Grove neighborhood. Built between 1914 and 1916 as the winter residence of American industrialist James Deering, co-founder of the Deering Harvester Company, this Italian Renaissance-style villa is one of the finest examples of Gilded Age architecture in the United States. The main house features 34 elaborately decorated rooms filled with European antiques, tapestries, paintings, and decorative arts spanning the 15th through 19th centuries. The 10 acres of formal gardens are modeled after Italian and French garden design, with fountains, sculptures, grottos, and a striking stone barge that appears to float in the bay. Vizcaya is one of Miami's most popular cultural attractions and one of the most photographed locations in South Florida, making it a beloved venue for weddings, quinceañeras, photo shoots, and special events. Guided tours and audio tours are available, and the museum regularly hosts art exhibitions, lectures, and cultural programs. The waterfront setting offers stunning views across Biscayne Bay, and the grounds are home to native tropical plants and wildlife.
The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, previously known as Villa Vizcaya, is the former villa and estate of businessman James Deering, of the Deering McCormick-International Harvester fortune, on Biscayne Bay in the present-day Coconut Grove neighborhood of Miami, Florida. The early 20th-century Vizcaya estate also includes extensive Italian Renaissance gardens, native woodland landscape, and a historic village outbuildings compound.
