About Deering Estate
The Deering Estate at Cutler is a 444-acre environmental and archaeological preserve on the shores of Biscayne Bay in south Miami-Dade County. The estate was originally built between 1916 and 1922 as the winter residence of Charles Deering, half-brother of James Deering (who built Vizcaya). The property features two historic homes β the Richmond Cottage, a wooden pioneer-era house built in 1900, and the Stone House, a Mediterranean Revival mansion overlooking the bay. The estate grounds encompass some of the last remaining tropical hardwood hammock and pine rockland habitats in Miami-Dade County, along with mangrove shorelines and an offshore island. Visitors can explore the grounds on guided nature walks, kayak through the mangroves, tour the historic homes, and visit rotating art exhibitions in the estate's gallery spaces. Archaeological sites on the property show evidence of Native American Tequesta inhabitation dating back 10,000 years. The Deering Estate hosts monthly Full Moon tours, wine and jazz events, and educational programs. It's a hidden gem that combines Miami's natural beauty, history, and culture in one stunning waterfront setting.
Deering Estate is the former Florida home of Charles Deering until 1927 when he died at the estate. The Charles Deering Estate rests on 444 acres and comprises two buildings known as the Richmond Cottage and the Stone House. Both buildings are used as historical museums that center the Deering family. Both homes are filled with paintings, artifacts, books and antique furnishings.
