About Coral Castle
Coral Castle is one of the most mysterious and fascinating attractions in South Florida β a massive stone structure hand-carved from over 1,100 tons of oolite limestone (coral rock) by a single man, Edward Leedskalnin, working alone over 28 years from 1923 to 1951. Located in Homestead, about 30 miles south of downtown Miami, the site features stone walls, a perfectly balanced 9-ton swinging gate, a 30-ton telescope aimed at the North Star, precisely carved rocking chairs, stone tables, and a coral sundial. How Leedskalnin β a small man weighing only 100 pounds β managed to quarry, carve, and move these massive stones by himself remains a mystery that has never been fully explained, drawing comparisons to Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been featured on numerous television shows investigating its construction methods. Guided audio tours explain the history and theories behind the castle. Coral Castle is about a 45-minute drive from Miami Beach and can be combined with a trip to Everglades National Park or Biscayne National Park for a full day in south Miami-Dade County.
Coral Castle is an oolite limestone structure created by the Latvian-American eccentric Edward Leedskalnin (1887β1951). It comprises numerous large stones, each weighing several tons, sculpted into a variety of shapes, including slab walls, tables, chairs, a crescent moon, a water fountain and a sundial.
