About Matheson Hammock Park Beach
Matheson Hammock Park Beach is one of Miami's most unique beach experiences. Located in Coral Gables on the shore of Biscayne Bay, this Miami-Dade County park features a man-made atoll pool — a semi-circular wading area that fills with clean bay water at high tide, then retains the calm, warm water as the tide recedes. The result is an almost pool-like swimming experience with no waves, no currents, and a gentle sandy bottom, making it the safest beach in Miami for toddlers and young children. The surrounding park is one of the oldest in the county, with mature mangrove forests, a coral rock trail, and stunning views across Biscayne Bay toward Key Biscayne and the Miami skyline. The park includes the popular Red Fish Grill, a waterfront restaurant serving fresh seafood and cocktails with panoramic bay views — one of the best sunset dinner spots in Miami. A full-service marina offers boat rentals and sailing lessons. Parking is $7 per vehicle. Matheson Hammock is a favorite among local families and is far less known to tourists than the ocean-facing beaches, making it a genuine hidden gem. The mangrove-lined shoreline also attracts wading birds, making it a great spot for birdwatching and nature photography.
Matheson Hammock Park is a 630 acres (2.5 km2) urban park in metropolitan Miami on 9610 Old Cutler Road, just south of Coral Gables, Florida. The park surrounds the north and western ends of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden.
